By the Numbers Jets on a Roll

By the Numbers Jets on a Roll By the Numbers Jets on a Roll The two commercial aircraft leaders see almost eye to eye on the future, but differ on the details. Both companies, Boeing and Airbus, expect economic growth to double the number of passenger and cargo jets over the next 20 years. Boeing predicts global sales of jet aircraft will rise an average of 4.9 percent per year. Airbus, forecasting an average increase of 4.6 percent per year, is only a shade more conservative.Their numbers would yield a market worth $4.9 trillion to $5.6 trillion between 2014 and 2034. If the past is any guide, behauptung estimates are very reasonable, said Richard L. Aboulafia, vice president of analysis at Teal Group, an aerospace and defense analysis firm.Although their totals nearly match, Boeing and Airbus differ on the markets makeup. Boeing believes that passengers and shippers who want point-to-point convenience will drive demand for single-aisle airliners and cargo jets.Wide-body jets such as the Airbus A380 have accounted for half of airline industry purchasing dollars.Airbus disagrees. It expects increasing besucherzahlen between megacities will drive demand for more dual-aisle wide-body aircraft. So while the two companies predict $2.7 trillion in wide-body sales over the coming 20 years, they paint very different futures. Boeing sees 8,830 wide-body aircraft, equivalent to 25 percent of total deliveries and 49 percent of total sales Airbus expects 9,658 of those planes, equal to 30 percent of a smaller total market and 55 percent of sales.Their single-aisle airplane projections also diverge sharply. Airbus predicts 22,927 single-aisle aircraft worth $2.2 trillion over the next two decades. Boeing, which sees a $600 billion larger total market, expects 26,730 single-aisle airplanes worth $2.8 trillion. So far, history seems to support Boeing. The Airbus A380, a double-deck superjumbo, entered commercial service in October 2007, has gained little traction among global carriers, while sales of the new single-aisle Airbus A320neo are growing rapidly.Still, wide-body aircraft have historically accounted for half of airplane sales dollars, and that will be true going forward, Aboulafia said.Aircraft makers agree that emerging nations will be major growth drivers. Airbus expects traffic in China to triple between 2014 and 2034. Brazilian aerospace conglomerate Embraer predicts China and the Middle East will be the fastest growing markets, followed by Latin America, Africa, Asia Pacific, and the Commonwealth of Independent States.Boeing predicts that increasing air traffic in the Asia-Pacific region will lead to purchases of more than 14,000 new airplanes valued at $2.2 trillion. Boeing and Airbus are also bullish on air cargo. Boeing estimates 4.7 percent annual growth will expand the freighter fleet by 70 percent, to 2,930 jets, by 2034. Airbus predicts a 65 percent increase. These optimistic forecasts may face hea dwinds, such as the recent economic slowdown in China. A 2015 report by the International Air Transport Association, which represents the airline industry, acknowledges that air passenger markets will be hit by shocks, but predicts that they will rebound, as they have done in the past.Aboulafia agrees. For 60 years, he said, remarkably consistent jetliner markets have made long-term forecasts relatively easy. It is predicting the next year that is impossible. The ups and down are beyond most predictive powers, he said. For Further Discussion Aircraft makers agree that emerging nations will be major growth drivers.

Break bad habits in 21 days (more or less)

Break bad habits in 21 days (more or less)Break bad habits in 21 days (more or less)Self-Assessment Quiz - TRUE or FALSEIm good at setting goals and keeping them.I believe in myself.Im worth trying to make myself better, and Ill take whatever time necessary to be a better me.Im so happy wevetaken timeto hold a magnifying glass to bad habits in the workplace Specifically, those bad habits related to things like negative body language that might be unternehmensverbund you back from a well-deserved promotion, or bad habits related to how you get down with your co-workers in your communication, or those bad habits that you didnt even know were bad, like talking too much about your weekend when you thought you were being social. Cmon nowNow that weve got that magnifying glass in hand, and youve zoomed in on some areas where you can make a change, I wanted to offer some extra help to keep you free of bad habitsIm a big fan of setting goals and challenges. Theresevidenceout there that says you can break a habit in 21 days, and theres just as much evidence thatsays you cant. But what I think is good about setting a time frame for yourself is it gives you a way tobreak your goals down into bite-sizedPink Elephants. Some habits can be changed in two days some can take longer. But with an allotted time attached to your goal, youll know youre on track for success.Lets examine a simple habit, like being late for work. (Definitely the type of bad habit thats not making you look good, honey) I used to work with a young woman who was late every-single-day. Rain or shine, didnt matter. Shed come running in, huffing and puffing, bags and coat flying. It was pretty unnerving for all of us to witness Then wed have to hear aboutwhyshe was late and wait for her to calm down beforewecould get back to work. Is this you? (Ummm-hmm. Thank you for being honest) Now, what can you do? Being late aint always about hating your job and not wanting to be there so you cant get your butt out of b ed. The issue is usually based on behavior that can be changed. For exampleOrganization Are you late because you cant find your keys? This is a real thing. I know because I suffered from this FOR YEARS So each day I walk in any of my houses, I now have ONE place, the SAME place, I drop keys automatically. Like in a key bowl near the door. Or a key hook near the door. Or the same pocket in your purse. The purse pocket thang is what did me in. Because I change purses almost every day. So I could never remember which purse Id carried the day before and it took time weeding through all my bags searching for keys. So I have a location by the door where keys now go. Even in hotel rooms I was forever standing at the front desk of a hotel asking for a replacement key because I couldnt remember where Id stashed that dang gone thin key card. bedrngnis any more. I am happy to report I placed my keys in the same spot for 21 days straight and I am no longer afflicted by the lost keys syndrome. Do it. This works. I promise.Focus Maybe you dont like your job. Youd rather be anywhere but there, and each morning is a chore to get up and get out the door. If this is the case, change your focus. Either do a 21-day happiness challenge to find joy in your job (and life), or start making a 30-day plan RIGHT NOW to get out of this job. You can do it, but you must make a plan and stick to it. Action is the antidote to despair. Stay in action honey. It will help you.Preparation Is your closet a disaster? Little things like missing buttons on a blouse, wrinkled pants, or not being able to find a shoe can cause you to be flustered, annoyed, depressed, andlatebecauseyou cant get dressedPlease take the next three weekends to get your closet in order. Use Sundays to plan out what you are going to wear for the week, down to your shoes and purse. Mark your outfits on your calendar. Here are moretipsto help you. Do this. It works. I promise. (Have I lied to you yet?)Desire Do youwantto be on time? Like, for real for real? The magnet on my refrigerator reminds me, If you really wanted to you would. And that goes for anything - including being on time. Your desire to be on time has to be stronger than your willingness to be late. And real talk- if you want to be late, then be late, and dont turn into a crazy Tasmanian Devil running in the door like you tried to avoid this situation. Because you didnt Talk to your boss, and ask her if you can simply stay late or miss a lunch to make your mornings better. I have a friend who manages her day like this. She was honest with herself and knew she couldnt make it at 900 on the dot, but had no problem staying until 700 or 800 or when the work was done. Her boss was down with that. If youdowant to be on time, take one week, five STRAIGHT days, where you go to bed and wake up each day with the intention to be on time. Try it It works. I promise.Choose one bad habit that you want to kick. This is your goal. (Make sure it isSMART ). And assign some time, whether 21 days or otherwise, and get yourself on track to be bad-habit free in no time By the way, if you answered false to the self-assessment quiz above, I hope you now feel you have some ammunition to get yourself answering TRUECheryl Grace is the sassy aunt, best friend, and mentor youve always needed in your life. Tell Me What You Would Have Done Differently at Work

Tell Me What You Would Have Done Differently at WorkTell Me What You Would Have Done Differently at WorkWhen interviewers ask you questions about things you would have done differently at work, they want to gain insight into yourjob-related weaknesses. They may also be attempting to determine how you respond to failure, and whether you can identify and address your shortcomings proactively. If you think about this question ahead of time, you wont find yourself swallowing hard and struggling to find an answer during your interview. The best approach is to know how to spin your answer so that you can demonstrate how youve reflected upon and learned from past experiences. How to Prepare an Answer When youre preparing a response, reflect on your past work experiences and make a list of situations which didnt turn out the way you would have liked. Think about the actions you took (or didnt take), and how they resulted in a less-than-ideal outcome. Identify similar scenarios that you e ncountered again after those initial disappointments, but where you performed differently. What did you learn from the negative result, and what did you do to strengthen your ability to handle similar situations in the future? Examples of the Best Answers Be prepared to mention any steps you took to upgrade your skills, increase your knowledge base, or modify counterproductive behaviors. Turn your weakness into a learning opportunity, and share the ways you gained newskills for problem-solving. Maybe you have taken a workshop or sought out advice from a mentor. The reason you would have done it differently now is that you look the initiative to learn how to handle a difficult situation to get a positive outcome. For example, you might have had an early experience as a manager when you allowed an individual with a negative personality to interfere with the group dynamics of your team. If in a subsequent management experience you took an assertive approach by coaching a similar em ployee to change his behavior (or leave the unit), then you might reference the initial incident as something you would have done differently. You can give examples of how the first experience showed you the consequences of allowing the employees behavior to erode the team morale, inspiring you to expand your skills so you were able to put a stop to the issue before it became a problem the next time. Given your subsequent experience, you can say that you did handle it differently later on, and alleviate any concern the employer might have about your toughness or assertiveness as a manager. If you consulted Human Resources, attended a workshop on handling difficult employees, or employed another strategy to address the weakness, then you should surely mention the specific steps you took to enable your improved response. Be CarefulWhen You Respond Naturally, you should avoid referencing any scenarios revealing weaknesses that would interfere with you carrying out key elements of t he job, unless you can offer clear substantiated facts that those weaknesses are no longer an issue. Interviewers ask about weaknesses for a variety of reasons. They want to know how self-aware you are, and whether you have the ability to be critical of your own performance. Everyone has weaknesses, and employers want to know that you understand yours, that you take active steps to learn from them, and that you avoid allowing them to create problems at work. You dont want to give the interviewer an opportunity not to hire you because shes concerned about your ability to do the job. Here are moratips for responding to interview questions about weaknesses. Be Honest As with all interview responses, be sure to select issues which you can discuss honestly and sincerely, since interviewers will usually notice fabrications.Stretching the truthduring an interview can make it difficult to keep your story consistent. Depending on the extent and depth of your lies, this can cause a job of fer to be withdrawn. You can even be fired for lying during the application process after you have been hired. Be Prepared Spending some extra timepreparing for your interviewis well worth it. You worked hard just to score the interview, and you deserve the best shot possible at a job offer. Review the most common interview questions employers asked, so youre ready to respond. The more you know about a company going into the interview, the better prepared you can be to answer tough questions about your qualifications. Making the effort to familiarize yourself with the companys practices andcorporate culturecan help you anticipate what kinds of questions youre likely to be asked, and how to frame your responses in a way that will be received positively. Finally, make sure youdress appropriately, and be polite to absolutely everyone you meet.

Talk Like A Leader, Talk Like TED

Talk Like A Leader, Talk Like teddy boyTalk Like A Leader, Talk Like TEDTalk Like A Leader, Talk Like TED Gallo, author of Talk Like TED The 9 Public-Speaking Secrets of the Worlds Top Minds (St. Martins Press, 2014)Like it or not, your communication skills at work are being compared to TED talks. The TED conference Technology/Entertainment/Design recently celebrated its 30th anniversary and is widely considered the gold standard when it comes to public presentations.Heres why TED presentations are viewed mora thantwo million times per day while smaller, independently organized TEDx events are held in 145 countries. That means its likely your audience - employees, customers, and prospects - have been exposed to the TED style. As a leader, you may have a great ideas. But in the information age, if you cannot communicate your idea persuasively in a succinct, compelling pitch or presentation, it doesnt matter.Based on my analysis of 500 TED presentations, here arefive techniques to impr ove your business presentation skills and to talk like a leader people want to follow.1) Tell personal stories. Telling personal stories is the single best way to make an emotional connection with your listener. After categorizing 150 hours of TED talks, I found that stories make up 65 percent to 72 percent of the content.Researchers at Princeton University are finding that when someone tells a story, the same regions of the listeners brain and the speakers brain light up. That means the two people are literally in sync.TED in Action Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg started a movement called Lean in. It all began with an 18-minute TED talk. Sandberg acknowledged that her original presentation welches chock full of data and no personal stories. A friend suggested that she downplay the data and tell personal stories of her own struggle balancing work and family. She did and it made all the difference.2) Stick to the rule of three. Simply put, we can only remember about three to five key m essages in short term memory. Theres a reason why the Declaration of Independence guarantees the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The rule of three is well established among authors in the academic research on persuasion. Not surprisingly, the rule of three is pervasive across the most famous TED talks.TED in Action Civil rights attorney Bryan Stevenson received the longest standing ovation in TED history after telling three stories from his life.Dr. Jill Bolte-Taylor delivered one of the most popular TED talks of all time. Her Stroke of Insight has been viewed more than 15 million times. She divided the 18-minute presentation into three easy-to-follow sections. The next time you deliver a presentation try to deliver no more than three to five main points. It will increase the likelihood that your audience will embrace your idea.3) Obey the 18-minute guideline. No speaker on the TED stage is allowed to talk for more than 18 minutes. It doesnt matter if your name i s Bill Gates or Sheryl Sandberg. Eighteen minutes is all you get. TED organizers have found that 18 minutes is the ideal amount of time to have a serious discussion without putting your audience to sleep.Researchers have discovered that when a leader speaks for too long it results in cognitive backlog. Simply put, when you talk for too long you give your audience far too much information to remember and theyll forget everything.TED in Action I recently learned that one global technology giant is putting strict limits on internal presentations - no more than 18 minutes. They find that employees are far more engaged in the presentation and evaluate the leaders communication skills much more highly.4) Use humor without telling a joke. Most leaders are not comedians. Theres a real art to telling a joke. Dont feel as though you need to make one. That said, humor is very important to tear down walls and to connect us to one another.TED in Action Sir Ken Robinson is an educator and gave th e most famous TED talk in history. Its been viewed more than 20 million times. He was very funny and never told a joke. He used anecdotal humor - personal observations to elicit a smile and not a belly laugh. For example he said, I was at a dinner party - actually, if youre in education youre rarely invited to dinner partiesKeep it light, bring a smile to your audience, but dont feel as though you need tell a formal joke.5) Practice more than you think you should. Most leaders I know practice their golf swing far more than theyve rehearsed a pitch that can make or break their business.TED in Action Dr. Jill Bolte-Taylor rehearsed her TED talk more than 200 times. One of the viewers was Oprah Winfrey - it changed Dr. Jills entire life and career. When you must deliver a presentation where the stakes are high, practice the entire presentation exactly as you plan to deliver it and do it many, many times. You have ideas that were meant to be heard. Dont sabotierung your leadership pote ntial by failing to craft and deliver a business presentation that connects to your listeners and moves people to action.Author BioCarmine Gallo is the author of Talk Like TED The 9 Public-Speaking Secrets of the Worlds Top MindsandThe Presentation Secrets of Steve Jobs, among other books.
